Did you think about getting the KickrBike instead? I like having a dedicated stationary bike, but I feel like the market is missing a stationary bike that adapts to your effort to keep you in Zone 2, kinda like the Peloton Bike+ automatically adjusts the resistance depending on what the class is doing.
I think the kickrbike and the smart trainer work pretty similarly. it’s not responsive to HRZ but you can create workouts in Zwift that keep you in specific power zones for as long as you want, and if you’re regularly doing FTP tests the power zones will map to your HRZ pretty smoothly. both the trainer and the bike have erg mode which is nice.
When I got my setup I didn’t have a regular bike and thought I’d want the option of taking my bike outside, hence getting a bike and a trainer rather than a stationary bike. but I actually far prefer indoor to outdoor cycling so the kickrbike may have been a better option.
Such a great and relatable article, Hilary. I've definitely fallen into the "cardio's not for me" camp in the past, but understanding VO2 max and Heart Rate Zone training really helped me reframe my approach. That concept of aerobic vs. anaerobic training is also great.
